چکیده

X-ray microtomography is routinely used to image the three-dimensional pore space of sedimentary rocks. Flow and transport properties can then be simulated directly in such images. Advective transport in porous media is frequently simulated using streamlines. We present a novel streamline tracing algorithm based on a substantial development of the most widely used method (the Pollock algorithm) employed for macroscale (Darcy) flow, making it consistent with solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation with no flow at solid boundaries. We use this new algorithm to calculate breakthrough curves and timeof-flight distributions for advection-dominated transport in two three-dimensional images of sedimentary rocks containing up to 109 voxels: a sandstone and a carbonate. We show that our approach provides a more accurate description of flow, particularly when only a few image voxels span each pore. Therefore, it is better suited to capture anomalous (non-Fickian) transport behaviour than the standard Pollock method.

Sensitivity Analysis of the Effect of Pore Structure and Geometry on Petrophysical and Electrical Properties of Tight Media: Random Network Modeling

Several methodologies published in the literature can be used to construct realistic pore networks for simple rocks, whereas in complex pore geometry formations, as formed in tight reservoirs, such a construction still remains a challenge. A basic understanding of pore structure and topology is essential to overcome the challenges associated with the pore scale modeling of tight porous media. A...

Investigation of pore-scale random porous media using lattice boltzmann method

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Solute Transport in Heterogeneous Porous Media with Conduits to Estimate Macroscopic Continuous Time Random Walk Model Parameters

We use Lattice Boltzmann models to simulate solute transport in porous media traversed by larger conduits and fit the resulting solute breakthrough curves with macroscopic Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) models. In this paper, the porous media are simulated using a real-numbered coefficient that partially damps the inertial components of the flow and, when the damping is large enough, leads ...

Robust streamline tracing for the simulation of porous media flow on general triangular and quadrilateral grids

Streamline methods for subsurface-flow simulation have received renewed attention as fast alternatives to traditional finite volume or finite element methods. Key aspects of streamline simulation are the accurate tracing of streamlines and the computation of travel time along individual streamlines. In this paper, we propose a new streamline tracing framework that enables the extension of strea...

A New Approach for Constructing Pore Network Model of Two Phase Flow in Porous Media

Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...
